Protect yourself and your property with TitleVest's ACRIStracker™

New York, New York - December 4, 2008 - There's no foolproof way to stop someone from stealing your property with a fake deed - just as there's no certain way to stop a skilled thief from stealing your car. But there are some things you can do to protect yourself. Part of the reason it's so easy is that deeds are public record. Anyone can see them simply by going on the New York Office of the City Register Web site.

You can protect yourself by checking that Web site to see if there have been any illegal transactions involving your property.

You also can program the site to send you an e-mail notification of such transactions.

Here's what to do:

  • Go to acristracker.com.

  • Click on Property Tracker.

  • Enter the borough, property block and lot number. (If you don't know the block and lot number, go to www.nyc.gov/acris , and follow the instructions to find them.)

  • Give Property Tracker your e-mail address.

  • For 90 days after submitting that information you will be automatically notified by e-mail of any transaction involving your property.

  • At the end of 90 days, repeat the procedure. If you discover an illicit transaction, immediately call police and your local district attorney's office.
